Huchuy Qosqo Trek Description:
Huchuy Qosqo is an archaeological site located at 3650 m.a.s.l. (11800 fasl). Huchuy Qosqo (wich means Small Cusco) is an interesting set of ruins that are believed to have been abandoned by the time the Spanish arrived in Peru.It was built during the government of Wiracocha who choose it as his residence for militar and political reasons. The settlement comprised two floor buildings, houses for the workers and soldiers, terraces and two big squares. Its estrategical location at the top of Vilcabamba mountains, surrounded by the Apus Sahuasiray and Pitusiray shows the importance of this Inca site.
The trek to Huchuy Qosqo lasts 3 days and 2 nights. We’ll get to see the religious acqueducts of Tambomachay, the amazing geological formation of Queser and beautiful scenes in the route that lead to an amazing rchaeological site.
Huchuy Qosqo Trek Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO - VILLAGE OF PUCAMARCA
The first day of the hike is easy. We are collected early from our hotel in a private transportation, towards the interesting ruins of Tambomachay (3700 meters). From here we follow the main road it curves sharply up hill to reach a pass of near 4200 meters. The beginning of the trek will be on level terrain, and the landscape will be that of typical Andean valleys rich in corn, potatoes, barley, quinoa and other Andean tubers.
Follow it down into valley and through the small community at the bottom. As we descend along the trail you will see a beautifully green valley stretching away. The path we see on its right slope leads to Pisac. Passing through the village and across a new bridge the trail takes us up over the second pass at around 4300 meters into high open country.
On route we will see Lake Qoricocha (Golden Lake in Quechua) We continue along this clear trail. Arriving at the highest point of the trek, at 4350 meters. Finally, we descend towards the Pucamarca community at 4010m / 13153 ft, where we arrive in the late afternoon. Here we dine and camp through the night.
DAY 2: VILLAGE OF PUCAMARCA - HUCHUY QOSQO – AGUAS CALIENTES.
Just below the village the valley narrows to form a ravine where an Inca staircase will lead us down to the magnificent citadel of Huchuy Qosqo. Huchuy Qosqo is perched above the Urubamba Valley, overlooking the little town of Lamay. It was an administrative center such us Pisac, has fine buildings made with stone and there is one which is a unique example paved with stones perfectly fitted. In the hillsides there are granaries due it was also and important agricultural center. It boasts very fine stonework in a large Kallanka ( rectangular Hall), some residential and defensive quarters and interesting two-story buildings in stone and adobe.Continuing along this now magnificent path, with Pitusiray looming above us across the valley we will eventually pass an Inca stone and adobe gateway. This is was the entrance to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo for people who climbed up from the Urubamba Valley.
After guided tour into Huchuyqosqo we will continue descending to Lamay at 3000 meters elevation where our private transportation will be waiting for us to take us to Ollantaytambo. We then board an afternoon train that will take us to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, we will be accommodated at nice hotel. After the accomodation in a hotel at Aguas Calientes, you can go to the local Hot Springs or rest at the hotel.
DAY 3: MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO
After the breakfast we head to the bus stop to go up to the National Sanctuary of Machupicchu. We can take the earliest bus in order to visit a quiet and beautiful Machupicchu.
